You're not engaging your students with constant questioning. You need to ask good, solid questions all the time. And pick on non-volunteers at random; rarely ever pick on a raised hand.

It has EVERYTHING to do with note passing. Disciplinary issues (talking, note-passing) are usually results of ineffective teaching strategies, especially regarding the methods used to question students.

Everyone here is free to ignore my advice. But teachers must be willing to examine their instructional techniques and how they affect classroom discipline. In my experience, classroom discipline problems are usually caused by subpar teaching strategies. The biggest culprit is the calling on raised hands after asking the students a question, in my opinion a damaging technique.

Angry note writing

I confiscated the most foul note last week in one of my classes.
At first I said I would read it to the class, but after reading it, I found it to be quite inappropriate. So, I told all the students that from now on I would make a copy of it, send it home to show the parents then I would post it on a buletin board. That stopped that action right away. I think they got the message.

Try it!

Reading it aloud is not the best plan b/c of content and also you don't want to inadvertantly embarass a student that was not invovled in the passing. I think sending it home to parents is a great consequence, coupled with some sort of detention or extra homework problem(s)?

If the note is full of profanity, I call the parent and refer it to the vice principal. Otherwise, if I see a note, I take it and keep it in a file folder for future reference.
