Lesson Plan Title : Fun with Pinatas

Age Range: Grade 3 through grade 5 (Elementary)

Overview and Purpose: In this activity, students celebrate Cinco de Mayo by making their own miniature piņatas.

Objective: The student will be able to create their own piņata using a mixture of flour and water and a balloon.

Resources:

Flour

Water

Balloons

Crepe paper

Tissue paper

Newspaper

Small treats

Activities:

Have the students make a paste out of water and flour and tear the newspaper into small strips or pieces. Then have them blow up the balloon, dip the newspaper in the water and flour mixture, and cover the balloon with it. Remind students to leave an opening at the top so they can put some treats inside their piņata. After the water and flour paste has dried, have the students pop the balloon and put some treats inside. They could then decorate the outside of their piņata with crepe and tissue paper.

Wrap Up:

Have the students experiment with the flour and water mixture until it is the right consistency for making paste. The students could also leave their piņatas empty and you could fill them for a special surprise.
