Lesson Plan Title : Create Your Own Lucky Charm

Age Range: Grade 6 through grade 8 (Middle School)

Overview and Purpose: A horseshoe and a rabbit's foot are two symbols of luck that are popular in American culture. In this art activity, students create their own lucky charm or symbol out of clay.

Objective: The student will be able to create their own lucky charm out of clay.

Resources:

Clay

Paint

Paint brushes

Kiln-optional

Activities:

Talk with your class about traditional symbols of luck. Ask them to create their own lucky charm using clay and paint. Explain that this symbol should be entirely fictitious; it doesn't have to actually have any meaning to them. When the students are finished, have them share and explain with the class how the symbol brings them luck.

Wrap Up:

You can extend this activity by having students write a history of their symbol. They can include when it was first used, how it was discovered that it was lucky, and how people use it today.
