Lesson Plan Title : Going Shopping

Age Range: Grade 3 through grade 5 (Elementary School)

Overview and Purpose: Making healthy choices during the holiday season is a struggle for most people. In this lesson, students create Thanksgiving day meals using the correct number of servings from each food groups.

Objective: The student will be able to

*create class posters showing foods you can have for a Thanksgiving meal.

*sort the pictures into the correct food groups.

Resources:

Grocery store ads

Large sheets of paper

Glue

Scissors

Activities:

On top of each piece of paper, write one of the five food groups. Have the students cut out foods that they think would be good to have at a Thanksgiving feast. Have them glue the foods on to the appropriate food group paper.

When everyone is finished, discuss the items on each paper. If any are on the wrong paper, help students figure out where they belong.

Wrap Up:

For homework, write the correct number of servings you should have of each food group each day. Have students write a journal entry describing which of the foods they would choose to eat on Thanksgiving Day.
